Will Your iPhone 17 Pro Case Fit the iPhone 18 Pro?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at its 9 September 2026 event, with pre-orders from 11 September and retail on 18 September. Apple has since published the full technical specifications, and they settle the question. That matters, because case fit is decided in millimetres.
Fit at a glance
| Comparison | Apple’s published dimensions | Does the case fit? |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro | Both 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm. The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 g. | Yes, on body dimensions. Check that the case still clears the new camera module. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max | Both 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm. The iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249 g. | Yes, on body dimensions. The same camera check applies. |
| Pro vs Pro Max | 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm against 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm | No. A Pro case will never fit a Pro Max. |
What OtterBox packaging actually claims
The strongest evidence is physical. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman photographed an OtterBox case already on sale at Best Buy whose packaging lists, in English and French, both iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro. A case maker printing two model names on one box is a commercial bet: OtterBox has committed inventory to the assumption that the two phones share a shell size (reported by iClarified).
Astropad, which makes anti-reflective screen protectors, said the same thing independently: co-founder Matt Ronge replied that his suppliers had told him the two models share dimensions (9to5Mac). Two accessory makers reaching the same conclusion carries weight. Their suppliers see case moulds and tooling months before launch, which is usually the earliest reliable signal of a phone outline.
Why that was a bet, and how it paid off
Gurman, who published the photograph, was not convinced by it at the time, calling the packaging a little early. Hedging was reasonable. Accessory makers routinely print optimistic compatibility and absorb the return rate, because the cost of a wrong box is far lower than the cost of missing launch week, and the supply chain was not telling one story. In this case the bet paid off.
What Apple’s specifications settled
Before launch, leaked materials from an iPhone supplier suggested the iPhone 18 Pro would be roughly two millimetres thicker, and a separate report claimed the Pro Max would be thicker and heavier. Apple’s published iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications show both reports were wrong. The iPhone 18 Pro measures 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm, exactly the same as the iPhone 17 Pro in Apple Support’s iPhone 17 Pro tech specs, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max matches the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm.
That matters because a rigid polycarbonate shell is moulded to a fixed internal depth and has no give, so two extra millimetres would have broken the fit of most hard cases. Identical dimensions mean a well-fitting iPhone 17 Pro case should seat just as well on the iPhone 18 Pro.
The answer is the same for both sizes, but the sizes are not interchangeable with each other. An iPhone 17 Pro case fits the iPhone 18 Pro, and an iPhone 17 Pro Max case fits the iPhone 18 Pro Max. A Pro case will never fit a Pro Max.
The camera bump is the other risk
Even with an identical body, the camera opening is a separate question. The iPhone 18 Pro carries a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture, which is new hardware in the same housing. If the module differs in height or width, an older case camera lip can foul it, and a case that does not seat flat is worse than no case, because it holds the lenses against whatever surface you put the phone down on. Camera cut-outs are the most common reason a case fails across generations, more often than the body outline itself.
How to test your case in two minutes
Seat the phone fully. It should click in and sit flat, with no bow across the back and no gap at any corner. A case you have to hold closed has already failed.
Check camera clearance. Put the phone face up on a flat table and look along the side. The case lip must stand proud of the lenses. If the glass touches the table, the case does not fit, whatever the box says.
Press every button. Volume, side button, and the Action and Camera Control positions should line up and click cleanly. Mushy or pre-pressed buttons mean the cut-outs are off by a millimetre or more.
Check the bottom edge. The charging port should sit centred in its cut-out, not high or low, and the speaker grilles should not be half covered.
Test wireless charging with the case on. A shell that fits mechanically can still hold a magnetic charger off centre if the internal magnets moved. See our guide to MagSafe shockproof cases if the magnets feel weak.
When an old case will not work
Rigid two-piece hard shells are the least forgiving, because they have no tolerance at all. Cases with a raised, closely cut camera bezel are next, for the reasons above. Folio and wallet cases with a fixed internal tray are as rigid as a hard shell despite the soft outside. And anything cut for an iPhone 15 Pro or older is a different outline entirely and will not fit regardless of this year claims.
FAQ
Will my iPhone 17 Pro case fit the iPhone 18 Pro?
On body dimensions, yes. Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro at an identical 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm, and the Pro Max models match too. The camera hardware is new, so check that your case still clears the lenses before relying on it.
Should I buy a new case before launch day?
Not if the case you own fits well. The bodies are identical, so test it with the checklist above and replace it only if the camera cut-out or buttons do not line up.
Is it safe to use a 17 Pro case temporarily?
Yes, and not only temporarily. The body dimensions are identical, so a case that seats flat and clears the lenses protects the iPhone 18 Pro as well as it protected the 17 Pro. A case that bows, rattles or touches the lenses does not.
Why would OtterBox print a model it has not tested?
Accessory makers work from supplier tooling and moulds months ahead, and launch week is the highest-volume period of their year. Printing both models is a low-cost bet: the upside is being on shelves on day one, the downside is returns. For the iPhone 18 Pro, the bet was right.
Where can I check the official dimensions?
Apple publishes them in the iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications. The iPhone 18 Pro measures 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm and weighs 211 g; the Pro Max measures 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm and weighs 249 g.
The bottom line
Keep your iPhone 17 Pro case. Apple’s specifications confirm the iPhone 18 Pro has the same body, so a case that fit well last year should fit now. Run the two-minute test above to check the camera cut-out and buttons, and only buy a new case if yours fails it.
